why do i have a strange feeling
this is all part of a plan...

...and come debate time,
even if she performed okay,
it would be praised and praised and praised
for simply not acting as stupid and dumb and pathetic
the days before.

that inquirer commentary was right (link here),
we filipinos shouldn't wallow in self-pity too much
for a much older democracy such as theirs
has its own misgivings too.

all they need is sing and dance
and you'd find a perfect match.

"This is not the time for statements.... I think the American people expect more of us. And I would hope that we would respond that way."
-John McCain (link here)

I mean, fine, recent days show that the problem's bigger than once thought but come on... I'm with those who say that there's a difference between political gamesmanship and statesmanship.

Take it from me, I've seen some pretty interesting statements...
...even on this side of the world.

ONE BIG FIGHT OBAMA!

anyway,

musings in 3 languages

so i'm supposed to make people think about this voter registration drive.
and honestly, the task isn't as easy as i first thought.

not to mention the politics surrounding it.

but we do what we can.
and so one of my latest attempts is some tambay-slash-kanto-boy sounding script of a pitch.
they are very very raw and bad and, i should say, not-the-nifty-kind rough.

so i will need your comments. please please please. and if you can have pitches of your own or you have edited mine to your fancy, do share it with others and the world.

because we all are change, after all, aren't we? yehey. see you on friday.

Kinsa ang pagbag-o? | FIRST ATTEMPT IN BISAYA

Sud-an sa buntag.

Huna-hunai uroy:
Kanus-a man ka uwahing giganahan sa imong kaugalingon?

Kanus-a man ka uwahing giganahan sa imong nasud?

Unya bi, kanus-a man ka uwahing giganahan jud sa imong Pilipinas?
Dili lalim tubagon oi.

Makita man gud nato kada adlaw.
Masuyop pa man gani nato kada adlaw kung buot huna-hunaon.
Kada sayop nga butang aning nasura.

Mao siguro ngano dili madali-dali ug tangtang.

Siguro, gikapoy na man jud ta tanan ani ba.

basig diay, diba?

Tutal, kita bitaw tanan ang mapuslan ani.
Unya atua gud ni nga Pilipinas.
Maoy ako ang pagbag-o.

Sino ang Pagbabago? | FIRST ATTEMPT IN FILIPINO

Yung gusto mong kainin pang-almusal.

yayain mo akong magpa-rehistro at bumoto

e di talagang magagawa natin 'to.

Who is Change? | FIRST ATTEMPT IN ENGLISH

Deep inside, we all want a little change every now and then.
We do get tired of the old stuff.
The music on the radio.
Our pictures on Friendster (even Friendster itself).
What we want for breakfast.
Even our hairstyles.

But sometimes, the old stuff die hard.
Others we simply can't let go.
Others we simply don't really care about.

But let's care about these for a minute.

Think about it:
When was the last time you felt good about your self?
Your crush finally saw you.
Your project got the highest score.
You finally cooked your pansit just right.
An easy question for most of us.

Now think about this:
When was the last time you felt good about your country?

But wait, do I even have to?
Well, you can sure live without feeling good about where you are.
But wouldn't your life be a bit better if you do?

So, when was the last time you felt good about your Philippines?
Not as easy a question for some of us.
Heck, it's a lot easier NOT to feel good for this country we're in.

We see it every day.
We even breathe it every day.
Every single wrong thing in this country.

Maybe this is why this bad old stuff dies so hard.
It's just really easy to NOT feel good.

Maybe we are all already tired of it.
Like old music, old Friendster pics, old breakfast meals, old hairstyles.
And though it's not as easy to change...

...maybe if we'd check up on each other every now and then
then finally we'd be getting what we all want.

After all, we are all in the same one Philippines anyway.
Our Philippines.
Our Philippines that deserves change.
Wait we are change.
I am Change.

In 2010, for example, we the young can reach more than half of the total vote.
56.6% to be exact!

Again, it's not as easy to change elections.
But if we be serious about checking up on each other--
say asking each other to register and vote
and nag each other every now and then
and actually be systematic about it all over the country
then why not?

After all, we all will be benefiting from its good results anyway.
And it's our Philippines.
And so yes, I am Change.

boyce will be boys

the night (slash morning) ended with songs sung by boyce avenue
and boy am i pleased. asked my brother about it and apparently he has heard of them already.

but better late than never, at least for cases like this.

the night started withmy first dinner with betsy, aisa (who is back from the states for a good while), and other strains alumni. followed by my second watching of bluerep's all shook up (last show later tonight, you better catch it). followed by second dinner with pola and mikey and gerauld. followed by truce at that warehouse in makati (congrats to fuss, the winning band and you should watch out for them too). followed by third dinner with steph and dustin.

at tiananmen bar was where i was acquainted with the florida-based quartet.

their version of chris brown's forever and leona lewis' bleeding love are my top favorites for now. but they have justin timberlake's lovestoned and onerepublic's apologize too.

nothing beats real good talent.
real good talent overflowed tonight (slash yesterday saturday).
even 'til the early hours of sunday.

fun in the finds

it's a simple pleasure to have spotted a book in the library that is not at all what you were first looking for.

this week it is carl sagan's the demon-haunted world: science as a candle in the dark.
maybe if i read this four years ago, i'd be in med school by now. or some lab.

but no regrets. management and the arts have similar nuances.
but what's nice about the book is that it's funny and relevant and simple and yet wildly insightful.

one other interesting find i found was this idea i spotted via springwise.com months ago.
it was about turning leaves into plates and now i've been going around convincing people to support the idea.

earlier, our strategy formulation and implementation class' business venture group performed a mock defense of the said business idea and i was very happy with how it turned out.

last is God's wonderful gift of allowing me to find time for anything little or big, so long as they're interesting. steph and carlos and i will kill each other if we shared what we found time for just yesterday. let's just say we had really good food.

to the stuff we find. cheers.

GO SNL!

winners all

the most difficult thing about having dinner with titos over alcohol and fatty food is that i end up utterly confused with which career to pursue after college. all other options suddenly sound more enticing.

dinner tonight was filled with amazing (to say the least) anecdotes about leadership, dealing with people, and the many ups and downs of this or that career, whether with fellow countrymen or with any other citizen of the world.

what struck me the most was how everyone was still very down-to-earth and how willingly they shared their past mistakes and their present troubles.

ho hum. makes smelling the flowers more interesting. at least for now.

winners too were ateneo and la salle.
the former showcased their supremacy
the latter showed heart

while the ue crowd simply abandoned their team with 5 minutes still left on the game.
tsk tsk. reminds me of some coach of some national team and some uaap team.

win or lose.
it's the choice we choose.

stories, more stories

caught myself just staring at nothing and thinking about nothing. i even complained to steph and carlos how unproductive i was lately.

until i thought of something that might help explain why. maybe i'm just overwhelmed with all the many stories that have transpired before me the past days. 'cause there were quite a number. too many in fact to fill this page.

today's longest story is quite interesting because it's about storytelling that you have to do because you get paid to do it. marketing for short. shanon, mica and i got into the final six of this upjma slash department of tourism marketing competition and it was so much fun even if we didn't get the top prize.

especially that last speaker who thought of a wonderful way to tell the philippine story in a compelling, insightful, relevant way.

more stories soon. more catching up to do.

and in case marketing is your thing too, watch this piece of communication:

enough said

like what i said to around a thousand high school student leaders in benitez hall: that i lost my voice may mean that i have said everything i wanted to say.

my voice still isn't fully recovered, which is sad because i was the one who kept reminding the group to use the diaphragm. project and modulate not with ones throat.

i'm a bit sick too thanks to the weather.
but like every other facilitator who did the almost-impossible the past four days, it was well worth it. and you're on a high once again.

only this time, you get feedback that you made one hell of a difference.
to at least one life or two, to at least one region or two, to at least one colleague or two.

the results are not in yet, it will take years for that peer2peer slash leadership training to bear fruit. the event was not free of controversy either, what with "imeldious" herself on the program (see today's inquirer editorial, a wonderful reminder, here)

but again, i learned a lot and had so much fun my jaws hurt.
i could not count the number of times where i just had to step back and say: crap, did that just happen 'cause it was totally beautiful.

totally beautiful.
almost 60 beautiful ateneans.
almost 6000 student leaders.
my last was my best
and i thank You for letting me.

no hair no hair

i think i cut my hair too short.
what's nice about short hair though is you feel the breeze right above your ears, which is a welcome change, especially that Christmas is near. very near.

anyway, i'm about to embark on a 5-day journey teaching high school students how peer-level stuffs can make a difference. at least 5,000 students. pretty cool.

this year is a huge leap from the ones before because what we're teaching them is something finally more real and relevant than the so-and-so irrefutable laws of leadership or the so-and-so habits of highly-effective teens.

the concept is a bit familiar but i'll share it after the entire thing. maybe.

some experiences are sure worth sharing.
others, like hair, are best kept short.

GO ATENEO! ONE BIG FIGHT TOM!
hope we find a tv set to watch the game live.

Google is next

just a few weeks ago, i read on time how facebook, apple and google are slugging it out to be the next ruler of the internet (link here). and by ruler i mean the winner of the platform wars.

to illustrate this, the next great platform would be like what ibm was via mainframes until microsoft came up with the windows operating system and then until the web became the dominant platform.

just this week, google launched chrome. it's new browser and reading the new york times, it's pretty nifty (link here). it's real nifty google even came up with a comic book for it (link here).

it's real nifty it's got nifty written all over it. i wonder what's next.

to whoever said he wants to work for Google, i say amen.

8 ways to drive a graphic designer mad

got this from sandra who got it from jorja.
common sense is uncommon.

8 Ways to Drive a Graphic Designer Mad

As everyone knows, graphic designers are the reason there are so many wars in this world. They get inside our heads with their subliminal advertising, force us against our will to spend money on the worst pieces of shit, and eventually, drive us to depression and random acts of violence. And of course, most of them are communists.

So to do my part to save the world from them, i made a list of things you can do when working with a graphic designer, to assure that they have a burn-out and leave this business FOREVER.

1-Microsoft Office
When you have to send a graphic designer a document, make sure it's made with a program from Microsoft Office. PC version if possible. If you have to send pictures, you'll have more success in driving them mad if, instead of just sending a jpeg or a raw camera file, you embed the pictures inside a Microsoft Office document like Word or Powerpoint. Don't forget to lower the resolution to 72 dpi so that they'll have to contact you again for a higher quality version. When you send them the "higher" version, make sure the size is at least 50% smaller. And if you're using email to send the pictures, forget the attatchment once in a while.

2-Fonts
If the graphic designer chooses Helvetica for a font, ask for Arial. If he chooses Arial, ask for Comic Sans. If he chooses Comic Sans, he's already half-insane, so your job's half done.

3-More is better
Let's say you want a newsletter designed. Graphic designers will always try to leave white space everywhere. Large margins, the leading and kerning of text, etc. They will tell you that they do this because it's easier to read, and leads to a more clean, professional look. But do not believe those lies. The reason they do this is to make the document bigger, with more pages, so that it costs you more at the print shop. Why do they do it? Because graphic designers hate you. They also eat babies. Uncooked, raw baby meat.

So make sure you ask them to put smaller margins and really, really small text. Many different fonts are also suggested (bonus if you ask for Comic Sans, Arial or Sand). Ask for clipart. Ask for many pictures (if you don't know how to send them, refer to #1). They will try to argue, and defend their choices but don't worry, in the end the client is always right and they will bow to your many requests.

4-Logos
If you have to send a graphic designer a logo for a particular project, let's say of a sponsor or partner, be sure to have it really really small and in a low-res gif or jpeg format. Again, bonus points if you insert it in a Word document before sending it. Now you might think that would be enough but if you really want to be successful in lowering the mental stability of a graphic designer, do your best to send a version of the logo over a hard to cut-out background. Black or white backgrounds should be avoided, as they are easy to cut-out with the darken or lighten layer style in photoshop. Once the graphic designer is done working on that bitmap logo, tell him you need it to be bigger.

If you need a custom made logo, make your own sketches on a napkin. Or better yet, make your 9 year old kid draw it. Your sketch shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to make. You don't want to make something that's detailed and easy to understand, because the less the designer understands what you want, the more you can make him change things afterwards. Never accept the first logo. Never accept the 9th, make him do many changes, colors, fonts & clip art. Ask him to add a picture in the logo. Bevels. Gradients. Comic Sans. And when he's at his 10th attempt, tell him that you like the 2nd one the most. I know, it's mean but remember: graphic designers are the cause of breast cancer among middle aged women.

5-Chosing your words
When describing what you want in a design, make sure to use terms that don't really mean anything. Terms like "jazz it up a bit" or "can you make it more webbish?". "I would like the design to be beautiful" or "I prefer nice graphics, graphics that, you know, when you look at them you go: Those are nice graphics." are other options. Don't feel bad about it, you've got the right. In fact, it's your duty because we all know that on fullmoons, graphic designers shapeshift into werewolves.

6-Colors
The best way for you to pick colors (because you don't want to let the graphic designer choose) is to write random colors on pieces of paper, put them in a hat and choose. The graphic designer will suggest to stay with 2-3 main colors at the most, but no. Choose as many as you like, and make sure to do the hat thing in front of him. While doing it, sing a very annoying song.

7-Deadlines
When it's your turn to approve the design, take your time. There is no rush. Take two days. Take six. Just as long as when the deadline of the project approaches, you get back to the designer with more corrections and changes that he has time to make. After all, graphic designers are responsible for the 911 attacks.

8-Finish him
After you've applied this list on your victim, it is part of human nature (although some would argue weather they're human or not) to get a bit insecure. As he realises that he just can't satisfy your needs, the graphic designer will most likely abandon all hopes of winning an argument and will just do whatever you tell him to do, without question. You want that in purple? Purple it is. Six different fonts? Sure!

You would think that at this point you have won, but don't forget the goal of this: he has to quit this business. So be ready for the final blow: When making final decisions on colors, shapes, fonts, etc, tell him that you are disappointed by his lack of initiative. Tell him that after all, he is the designer and that he should be the one to put his expertise and talent at work, not you. That you were expecting more output and advices about design from him.

Tell him you've had enough with his lack of creativity and that you would rather do your own layouts on Publisher instead of paying for his services. And there you go. You should have graphic designer all tucked into a straight jacket in no time!

Pacquiao retiring next year; to run in 2010
Puno swears boxer into Kampi at Crame By Abigail Kwok

MANILA, Philippines -- Boxing champion Manny Pacquiao on Monday said he is retiring from the ring next year and will be running again for public office in the 2010 elections.

“Sigurado na, na tatakbo ako [It is sure, I am running],” said Pacquiao at Camp Crame, headquarters of the Philippine National Police, where he was sworn in as member of the Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi, Partner of the Free Filipino), by Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno, who is also president of the party founded by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
