on too much Thinking

too much of anything is bad. agreed on that since 3rd grade, it is etched in my memory with "just a spoonful of sugar" as background music [you know how certain memories have a song or a scent associated with them].

but what about too much thinking? geegee brought it up earlier as one of the most beautiful slaps in the face ever- i think too much.

so do i really? or better yet
when is thinking too much thinking?

i got this comment many times already. what makes geegee's different is the line right after: when you do, there's a chance that you miss the opportunity to act on it.

suddenly there are consequences. more than just wasted time or brain energy, opportunities are at stake too. interesting.

yes, i think about thinking. i admit i'm real fascinated about it. i admitted too back at glam 2006 for strains that i'm first a thinker, then a doer, then a speaker. hence, the do-nothing idea. from creativity to logic to insight, it's just interesting. i believe you can never think too much about thinking. great sir penrose of oxford would describe human thought as quantum processes, real complex.

so there, there are things you can think too much about and there are things you can not. to look at it plainly, maybe one thinks too much when you could actually analyze it in simpler terms. like when management consultants use jargon just to tell you you've got to train your employees. or when something well thought of already is explained further, touching on what is seemingly unnecessary.

but is there anything really well thought of already that you don't have to think about it further? that banana peeling on the sidewalk or playing tennis in the rain.

nada. but where's the fun in that?
now that draws the line. when it's not fun anymore one is thinking too much. fun for me is spongebob while fun for you is mad tv, fine with me. fun is good

so is thinking, even too much Thinking.

moot and Academic

i bet he'd find that accounting exam hard too. the snowman

this week sure is a bad week for my academic standing. from i-could've-done-better midterms to missed quizzes. everything else turned out fine, sometimes even great. even my going home late was fine, partido agila seemed fine, strains slts was fine, lex snipe seemed fine, sweet charity rehearsals seemed fine and theology was great. so why did i lose sight of my target grade for the semester. how does it happen? once it was all so clear// how do you let it slip...

because Opposites attack

roofless footbridges are stupid. a total waste of resources.
i seriously thought of this when i was in gradeschool or something. i would argue that no one uses them because one either gets real heated up by the sun or all wet by the rain. i then would continue on mocking the stupid politician who is so proud of the stupid project, blatantly placing his stupid name on the stupid footbridge with no roof

for years that thought remained, locked into some part of my mind without me caring or consciously thinking about. then two or so years ago, i would notice a good number of streetpeople sleeping, staying, resting, maybe living on roofed footbridges.

and it dawned on me-
roofless footbridges are not stupid, i am. they were meant to aid pedestrians in crossing from one side of the road to the other and not to protect us from too much sunshine or rainwater. that is what umbrellas are for. it was a duh-karl moment.

this whole looking at many, usually opposing sides of anything is really a good thing. but if everyone does it all the time, there will be no need for lawyers. and so i question my career path again. even our theology teacher [and ice cream vica] questioned it. lawyers are meant to defend their side, no matter what the cost. only then will the pesos start flooding in. it isn't the most constructive profession in the world. seriously

that notion is noticeable too in this book called crimes against logic. i was so amazed when it cried "you do not really have the right to your opinion". when used in a discussion, the slogan "i'm entitled to my opinion" not only is irrelevant, it also is false. let's discuss it when i fully understand the thought.

for now, allow me to work on partido agila's campaign for sanggunian. yes, i am running, eager to join an organization i thought against when i first heard of it as a freshman. we shall see if it really is what it appears to be- dull, boring and filled with useless noise and whatnot. we'll see

so far so good.

a classic game of Pacman

a headline on 15rounds:

Filipino's more concerned with tonights fight than they are about possible coup
Philippine Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez said that Filipino's have been calling him voicing their concern over a possible coup, and whether-or-not it will affect the broadcast of Manny Pacquiao vs. Erik Morales

congratulations to manny pacquiao and his team.

on espn:
Round 10Morales returned to the jab, and looked like he could control the fight in center ring. But Pacquiao's body shots sent him to the ropes, and Morales retreated as Pacquiao attacked. Morales caught Pacquiao with a counter as he came forward, but Pacquiao resumed the attack to body and head and put Morales down for the first time in his career. Morales rose, but Pacquiao attacked again and dropped Morales against the ropes. Referee Kenny Bayless waved it off at 2:33, and Pacquiao won by TKO.

an open letter on useless stupidity

i still have to find dzmm 630's email ad, here's what i can tell them

dear dzmm,

forgive my lack of information on how good your radio programs are. the thing is, i hardly listen to you. but in those occasions where i get to hear what you broadcast, i hardly am bothered- except for a smile or a frown, i guess. but on my way home today in the cab, which is my idea of saving gas and money and time and the risk of killing innocent pedestrians, i was caught off-guard by what one of your speakers had to say:

ang yayabang ng mga taga-UP, yun pala mga mamamatay-tao. pera ng bayan ang pumupondo sa kanila tapos ito ang pinaggagagawa/
"UP students are real arrogant when in fact they're murderers. this nonsense is what they do after all the government funds appropriated to them"

not in verbatim but the guy was commenting on fraternities and hazing and how one member just got killed recently. i'm pretty sure what he said was something to that extent but you could always show me a recording or a transcript of what he really really said in verbatim and prove otherwise, it would really appease me if you could prove it otherwise, seriously.

because imagine the repercussions of those statements if indeed they were uttered on air. i don't think my ears fooled me, but i can not erase the possibility. for one, i don't seek to defend the great many scholars of UP or the fraternities whether they still practice hazing or not. the fact that it was a huge illicit generalization isn't even what annoys me the most. it's the fact that a good number of people listen to the guy- the cab driver is proof that some do listen.

imagine what a person who does not know really of UP think of UP after those statements. imagine what a person who does not know really of UP think of how the government spends its money. imagine what a person who does not know really of UP of the great many people who go to and rely upon and study at UP.

i do admit the listeners won't immediately connect that comment stated above around the hazing issue to my imagine-what-a-person comments, i doubt if some listeners will. but it is this subtlety of the comment that makes it more dangerous to listeners. these subtle comments are the very destructive comments we do not deliberately guard against because they are so subtle we don't bother. whether listeners connect both or not, listeners will take it in as a fact, especially after an emotionally arousing issue of an innocent student being killed in a "cold blood murder", the term the speaker used.

to me, the words are just plain stupid.
and here's more:

"the police represent authority. so if you kill a policeman you are like destroying authority, you are hurting the government."

well, he could be true. but imagine again the repercussions of that true statement. killing anyone, policeman or otherwise, is destructive. however, highlighting the fact that the person killed was a policeman subtly puts them above everyone else in the society when in fact they are not. i respect policemen, its a very noble profession. but the speaker is talking to an audience filled with a good number of people who currently believe they're better off with other people in charge. saying that statement above does not address this issue at all, it even ignites further the rage.

or maybe i should pray only the cab driver and i were listening to your station during those moments. or maybe i am just thinking too much. in any case, you as a part of the media are proud of being able to reach to many people. please think about reaching to them in a manner that isn't stupid or, at the very least, isn't useless.

we should talk,

karL.

right before i went down the cab i asked the driver if he knew who the speaker was.

cab driver: alfredo lim po
me: alfredo lim the senator?
cab driver: oho
me: what?

the? fuck? and i thought loi ejercito was the stupidest useless senator ever. there are two of them now on that pedestal.

today was officially delay-everything-else-coz-i'm-meeting-old-friends day. really for yza's bday which brought most of us, her high school friends singing and eating and catching up on each other. and man was there a lot of catching up to do.

seems like everyone is enjoying what they are currently doing. and are all pretty optimistic of what lies ahead. from erika's dance fitness to jed's viva beads. interesting night, really. i miss everyone already, not really but old friends sure have an effect on you. how different we all are from each other sure is proven by how the conversation skips from one subject to another. cute. from how merrily we roll along tackled compromise and this idealism to why we snicker at our future wives. tihee

it sure is worth all the messages i have to read, documents to start and finish and review, designs to come up with in a few minutes. inadequate amount of sleep but i've had worse nights. and a new day is about to begin

but they are both right. and i'm bothered cause i'm drowning myself with patriotism and stuff for this t-shirt joshua asked me to design for sanggu's office of the external vice-president. the theme is love your country. something i'm not really into right now. it's waaaay behind God, self, family, friends, future and the smiling stranger by the elevator or the jeepney.

pit Señor!

[from the sinulog foundation]

of my many memories of cebu's pride, the sinulog, it's the fact that the streets are always so clean the day after that makes me real proud.

it was around first year high school when i realize we shouldn't be dancing and going all crazy for a "miraculous" image of the baby Jesus and i still could remember debates with jb about why it ain't right. he isn't Catholic.

but for all it's worth, the sinulog is something that i am really really proud of.

maybe because lots of people wake up really early for something like this

or maybe because lots of people endure the heat of the sun for something like this

or maybe because lots of people, period. i always find it fascinating when lots of people do one thing. it sure is proof that we all could gather round and agree no matter how different we all are. even if it ain't really for that "miraculous image".

today, most of cebu are in her streets for the Sto. Niño, for Sinulog.

she's a Jazz band

or at least aim to be like one.

"There's a saying among jazz musicians: 'don't make it up if it doesn't help.' In other words, express yourself only when it contributes to the larger effort. The very existence of the improvising ensemble suggests that individual and community needs should not be viewed as an either/or proposition, but rather as two tendencies along a continuum of creation. The improvising jazz band is an open system, a dissipative structure, both richly coherent and in constant flux. Thus it is capable of endless transformation. As a network that resolves issues of autonomy and relationship, it is capable of being both intimate and expansive, of reconciling individual expression with the cohesion of the group."

Tricks to teaching

"14. Prevent near-sightedness!
Poor distance vision is rarely caused by genetics, says Anne Barber, O.D., an optometrist in Tacoma, Washington. "It's usually caused by near-point stress." In other words, staring at your computer screen for too long. So flex your way to 20/20 vision. Every few hours during the day, close your eyes, tense your body, take a deep breath, and, after a few seconds, release your breath and muscles at the same time. Tightening and releasing muscles such as the biceps and glutes can trick involuntary muscles -- like the eyes -- into relaxing as well."
